The Hawks Spread Their Wings on Two Wheels over the Midwest

In what has been described as a break-through season for the University of Iowa Cycling Team, the Hawkeye’s finished their year at the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships Weekend in Madison Wisconsin with great success. After just one year of team-building and hard training the Hawkeye’s built their team roster and were able to get 5 men from their “A” riding team to qualify as National Contenders.

Chris Moore and Matias Perret, Seniors, led the team consisting of Andrew Buntz, Junior and Sophomores Joe Nellis and A.J. Turner. The five men competed against nearly 500 other student racers from over 100 different colleges and universities from all over the nation. The road race set at Blue Mounds State Park proved to be one of the toughest of all season for the Hawkeye riders. Over 8,000 feet of climbing through 80 miles of riding were planned for the day. This course was challenging and set to be the road cycling course for the Chicago 2016 Olympics.

The Hawkeye’s planned on riding strong and being active throughout the race in their first year as National Championship Contenders. Unfortunately, the pouring rain and low temperatures resulted in many of their riders being un-able to finish through mechanical issues such as flat tires. Despite the elements that took out most of the team and fellow competitors, Chris Moore was able to ride strong and finish well in the pack of cyclists representing the University of Iowa Cycling Team’s determination and strength. The next day’s Criterium was held in downtown Madison circling the state capitol building. The short 4-corner course was flat, fast and a good opportunity for the Hawkeye riders to show their speed and bike handling skills they have honed throughout the season.

With speeds around 30 mph and sharp 90-degree corners, the race proved to be riveting for the huge viewing crowd. The Hawks, once again, represented the University of Iowa and their sponsors very well by being constantly active throughout the race and having A.J. Turner finish well in the front of the pack. Overall, the weekend proved to be a huge success for the constantly growing and developing team. With solid performances at the National Caliber-level the Hawk student racers are excited to return next year with even better showing and results.

A huge “Thank You” goes out to all friends, family, sponsors and everyone that made the USA Collegiate Cycling season a success and especially those involved with the National Championship Weekend. In particular the riders wished to thank the University of Iowa for their outstanding support, especially with funding and the use of their vehicles and trailers with which this weekend would not have happened.

With athletic competition at an elite level, nutrition is essential in gaining the edge needed for good results. The team would like to thank their main 2010 food sponsors; Cliff-Bar, Chipotle, Hy-Vee, and Graze Bar and Grill and Brueger’s Bagels. Without these sponsors and all of their generosity, the team surely wouldn’t have had the success they did have this year. Also, because of the constant need to be on the forefront of bicycle technology, the Hawkeyes needed mechanical support throughout the season that came kindly from World of Bikes. Located in downtown Iowa City, World of Bikes provided the team with the support they needed to ride well with their great products and exceptional services.

Other Sponsors we wish to thank are Iowa Book, Hands Jewelers and Holmes Murphy for their generous donations to the team. Keep checking back to our website here and look out for the force that will be the 2011 University of Iowa Cycling Team!
